The Seminar is open to IB Environmental Systems & Societies educators interested in developing their understanding of the changes to the Internal Assessment in the DP ESS course (first exams 2026). This seminar is appropriate for experienced ESS teachers who have previously supported students with their IAs.

The ESS IA Seminar will be led by Debbe Reilly. Debbe started her teaching career in 1991 in South Africa. She was first introduced to the world of IB in 2002 when she moved to the UK and has been teaching both Biology and ESS ever since. Debbe started marking ESS practical work and exams in 2003 as a way of improving her understanding of the expectations of the course and the assessments. Debbe has been a team leader, and part of the standardisation team for both IA and P2 for man years. For Debbe, being part of the wider ESS community makes teaching ESS such an enjoyable experience.

Approaches to Teaching In-Depth Seminar 2 (IBSCA members)
Open to educators from IBSCA member schools, our free Seminar series provides an in-depth look at some of the key topics and challenges facing our IB community.
The Seminar is open to experienced IB educators who are interested in deepening their understanding and application of ATLs. We are offering two ATL Seminars this academic year, each focused on different ATLs and how to improve your practice. Please note the Seminar will be delivered by an IB educator experienced in the DP or CP, so examples wil draw heavily from these programmes, though the Seminar is open to IB educators from the MYP and PYP as well.

The Approaches to Learning Seminar will be led by Natalie Lockhart-Mann. Natalie has worked in IB schools in many parts of the world, delivering all aspects of IB programmes, from CAS to TOK to IB coordination. She has been a Coordinator since 2016, and is now based in the UK, where she teaches English Literature and TOK, coordinates the IB programme in her school and occasionally finds time to run IB workshops. She loves working with new and experienced IB teachers and wishes she had more time to deliver workshops!

The Visual Arts Seminar will be led by John Rolfe. John has led dozens of IB workshops (both face-to-face and online), especially about Visual Arts, including category 1, 2 and 3 levels. The Supervising the Extended Essay Seminar will be led by Alex Green. After completing an undergraduate degree in Philosophy, Alex trained as a teacher and initially worked in London. Alex moved to a school to lead Philosophy, Religious Studies and TOK for one of the largest IB DP cohorts in the Europe, Africa and Middle East region. He has a range of roles with the IB including, workshop leading, site visiting, curriculum review team member and is highly experienced in assessment. He is currently the Deputy Head of an International School in Italy. He has supervised over 150 Extended Essays and his Extended Essay students all achieved A-grades in 2024.

The Interdisciplinary Extended Essay Seminar will be led by Loykie Lominé. Loykie has led over 200 IB workshops, especially about Extended Essays, including the particular interdisciplinary EE called 'World Studies Extended Essay'. He has worked in DP schools in Spain and Lithuania and he is the author of several IBDP books published by Oxford University Press. He was involved in the development and assessment of the first WSEE twelve years ago and can therefore share his expertise as both WSEE supervisor and WSEE examiner.

This seminar will be led by Rebecca Austin-Pickard. Rebecca has been an English teacher for 25 years and has spent much of her career involved in both the DP and CP in equal measure. Since 2006, she has worked as a department lead for Film as well as Language and Literature and Extended Essay before becoming CP coordinator in her school and coordinating the CP global pilot in Kent. Since 2017, she has worked full-time as an IB specialist consultant with roles such as verification and evaluation visitor, workshop facilitator, Lead Educator and IBEN trainer. She is also the author of the ThinkIB CP website, a range of IB professional development workshops for the IB and the textbook 'Reflective Project' published by Hatchette UK. Since 2023, Rebecca has been the CP Network facilitator and CP Lead for IBSCA.

The Chemistry IA Seminar will be led by Davel Allen. Dave has worked with the IB for over 20 years, first as an IA moderator, and then as an examiner. He counts himself fortunate that he trained as a workshop leader and has run over 30 face-to-face workshops. He has also written three iterations of the online workshops to reflect the syllabus changes in 2008, 2014, and the new course (first exams 2025). Two of these workshops were specific IA workshops. He has also written the current Cat 3 IA face-to-face workshop as well as a student book writing successful IA's. He has worked for IBSCA running face-to-face and online workshops since 2012 and is very much looking forward to delivering this upcoming seminar.

The Physics IA Seminar will be led by Tim Kirk. Tim is a graduate of Queens’ College, Cambridge. His association with the IBO started in the 1980s at Sevenoaks School, UK. Since then, he has worked exclusively in IB World schools in the UK, France and Italy. He has recently retired with his last role being Principal (Designate) for a new build school in Dubai. Over the years, he has contributed to pupil assessment as Deputy Chief Examiner for Physics; teacher training as a seasoned workshop leader in Europe and the Americas and curriculum development, as a member of two curriculum review committees. He is an IB-appointed consultant to schools working to be accredited to offer the diploma programme and has participated in a number of school accreditation visits. In 2001, he was commissioned by Oxford University Press to write the IB Study Guide for Physics and the Physics Course Companion (2nd edition March 2010). The 4th edition of the Study guide (for the 2025 syllabus) will be published in September 2023.

The Seminar is open to both IB English A Literature and IB English A Language & Literature educators interested in further developing their understanding and skills.
Seminar Description:
This seminar will aim to offer advice about how to prepare students for the revision and writing skills required by this assessment component as reflected in the criteria. The discussion will be informed by examiner feedback from M23 and will invite teachers to share experiences and good practice suggestions. One of our activities will be to create a resource bank IBSCA teachers can continue to use to collaborate on with questions and works studied.

Dr. Anna Androulaki-Woodcock has been teaching English since 1988. She started her career in the IB teaching Diploma Programme English and ToK in 2002 and since then she has also taken on the roles of examiner and workshop leader for the IB. Since 2002, her work has had an exclusive IB focus and her perspective has been shaped by teaching in very different and diverse contexts in Greece, Germany, the UK and China. The administrative positions she has held, viz. those of Diploma Programme Coordinator and Head of English, inform her understanding of contextual and pedagogical implications for the teaching of English for both students and teachers. She is the author of several academic papers in theoretical linguistics (the area of her PhD dissertation) with the most recent writing project being the Oxford University Press English A: Literature IB Prepared following the co-authoring of the Course Companion of the same subject. Between workshops and assignments, she enjoys spending time with her children and her friends, wherever they are.

This seminar is led by experienced IB educator, Meredieth Hughes. Meredith studied History, with a particular focus on African American history and Art as well as English at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and has a Masters of Fine Art in Creative Writing from the University of Washington in Seattle. In 2003, she completed her Masters of Education and has been teaching History, TOK and Language A: English at the Nelson Mandela School in Berlin, Germany since 2005. She participated in the setting up of the IB DP programme at her school which became an IB World School in 2005. She has held the position of DP Examiner for both TOK and History and has been a workshop leader for six years and has led workshops for IBSCA, Ibicus, InThinking and the IB.

This seminar is led by experienced IB educator, Amelia Rowan. Amelia studied IB Anthropology herself, before going on to study it at the University of Cambridge. After graduating from university, she went straight into teaching it at IB level in 2014. Amelia started the Anthropology course at her most recent school in London, and it went on to become one of the most successful courses there with at least 50% of each class attaining a grade 7. She is also an IB examiner for Anthropology, and has co-written an Anthropology revision book.

The Biology IA Seminar will be led by Sumit Nair. Sumit leads IB DP Workshops for ESS, Biology, TOK and ATLs, among others. He also serves the IB as a school visiting team member for DP Authorization and Evaluation. Sumit is an experienced IB coordinator and holds two Masters degrees - MSc Biotechnology and MSc Sustainable Development with a PGCE from the University of Derby, UK. He has extensive experience in DP assessment and marking, as well as leading a team of examiners for the IB. Sumit has already led several IB workshops on the new Biology course, including a number for IBSCA.

The past twenty years have been dedicated to nurturing leadership capacity in schools. Having completed an M.Phil. in Environment and Development at Cambridge University, Howard Collison stayed on at Cambridge to complete his PGCE in Geography. Joseph Reed has worked at Stonyhurst for over 8 years, first as an assistant curator (specialising in museum education) before training as a qualified archivist. This seminar will be led by experienced IB educator, Urs Jungo. Urs' involvement with the IB Diploma goes back to 1994 and since then he has supported the teaching and learning process as an educator in seven different countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Urs coordinated the IB Diploma programme for 15 years and, simultaneously, set up and developed the DP Core components of Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay in his respective schools. He also created and chaired both a professional development network for TOK teachers as well as one for TOK Coordinators within the Singapore/Malaysia/Brunei region.
In 2018, Urs introduced the DP Global Politics course at Swiss International Scientific School Dubai and, as the sole teacher of the course, took the first two student cohorts through the programme, whilst also establishing effective links between the Global Politics course and Theory of Knowledge, as part of the TOK integration across DP subjects process.

Open to educators from IBSCA member schools, our Seminar series provides an in-depth look at some of the key topics and challenges facing our IB community.
For this Seminar, join us for a detailed examination of the Extended Essay for IBDP Economics where you can ask questions, share good practice, and receive advice on how to refine your approach to supporting your students.
This Seminar will enable you to:
Develop skills to better support your students through the EE process from formulating a research question to writing their EE.
Deepen your understanding of your EE subject requirements and criteria.
Discuss elements of EE supervision you find particularly challenging and gain insights and advice from the Seminar Leader and fellow delegates.
Identify strategies and techniques that can assist you and other members of your department in strengthening your EE provision.
